LG LFD790 December 26, 2008 Lloyd Dixon (Kansas City) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
This system is dynamite! Particularly if you are an audiophile. For the money, the sound is very good. The system is a great enhancement for HDTV...especially the medium sized ones like the 32 and 37in in moderate sized rooms. The DVD player is upconverting and is very close to the picture provided by Blu-Ray. The fact that it has a hookup for XM radio (along with AM_FM) makes it totally unique. It also plays MP3's and CD's. There's also a USB port. It was not too difficult to hook up, but the non-audiophile members of my family find it a little challenging to operate. The sleek design makes it look like it came with my HDTV. This is one the best purchases that I have made in a long time!
Nice Sound, Akward User Interface December 20, 2008 Stephen Freeborn (Utah) I have owned this product for more than a year and I am satisfied with it. While I know it has its quirks, I am okay with them and happy with the product.
The user interface is less than easy to navigate. To change audio inputs, one has to change the TV to the proper channel and use the on-screen menus to make the changes. This can get really annoying, especially when other people, who aren't familiar with the product, try to use it. Because of this, I only use it when playing movies on my blu-ray player. I television's speakers for the cable and x-box. (I am fine with that though. While I wouldn't want to watch a movie on the television's sub-par speakers, I don't care about playing games or watching TV.)
I am not an audiophile so I can't speak to much for the sound. It has always sounded great to me. For those who like to change levels this product doesn't have an equalizer but it has always sounded great in my living room.
As a DVD upconverter I can't say too much either. I only ran a few DVDs through it before I bought my blu-ray player. I think that it did about as well as my Panasonic blu-ray player for upconversion. It seemed to struggle with my "Scrubs" DVDs and reds seemed to sometimes throw it off but I have noticed the same with my Panasonic.
I am still satisfied with this product. A 2.1 system is all I need. I really enjoy the way the speakers look and I like the plain front of the unit itself. While I can't do everything I would like with it, it suites my wants just fine. Someday I will buy a different system, but maybe I won't.
WHAT A BARGAIN! So far at least... November 9, 2009 Manuel Dejesus (Boston) Ordered from [...] and it was on sale at the time for $[...] with free shipping and no tax!
THE SHIPPING:
I was skeptical and thought this may be a mistake but it arrived a week after I ordered it. Brand new, factory sealed. Opened it up and everything is intact, doesn't seem like a factory refurb.
INTERFACE:
The non-techs will have a problem with the interface. Its annoying but after a few minutes I caught on. You can't plug an iPod directly in via USB but you can play it through the AUX with a Y cable. (stereo RCA to 3/4" inch balanced) Looks great though. It definitely will not make your home theater LOOK any worse. Most images available don't do it justice. Its obvious that LG understands that we want our electronics to also look good in our rooms. I have a large HDTV from LG and its sexy too.
SOUND:
Sound is great. It sounds better in stereo then my $[...]+ Samsung system thats in my living room. The sound is great for a bedroom or small living room. Wouldn't recommend it for a larger room. Tried it with a PS3 game and its awesome. It has a bonus digital optical input for sound. I agree with most reviews that the virtual surround sound feature is really just a gimmick. It sounds tinny and like they simply added reverb to the sound.
HOOK UP:
Really different setup when comparing it with other HTIB's. (home theater in a box) The amp, and most of the connections are located on the sub. Only the USB and HDMI ports are on the receiver which means you will have to store the sub close to the receiver, might be inconvenient. Proprietary speaker connectors but very clean simple design. I like that the whole unit only needs 1 power cord.
OVERALL:
So far, so good. I am basing my utter joy off of the fact that I only paid $[...]. Not sure if I'd pay what its selling for right now. Then again, I already had an existing home theater and wanted something for my bedroom.
Perfect low budget 2.1 December 26, 2009 D. Fryman (Kentucky) I have a medium sized bedroom, and will soon be owning a pretty large living room, own TWO of these. Why?! They are perfect space-savers, probably the nicest-looking 2.1's I've ever seen, and easily crush any PC speaker setups you could own.
For some, it will be a pain to not see the interface, but when I thump this baby, my cousin has to blare his LG 5.1 Blu-Ray system in order to hear over the "thudd" of my little-bitty 2.1's. But they are not too bass-heavy, good for voice chatter and movie effects, great audio quality (even from just normal audio cable).
Got mine for a random Best Buy clearance sale, had them 3 years, except for a few random DVD-R burned home movies, no problems at all. Not sure if I'd buy brand new, but definitely worth the $. Don't use VSM!
Okay for what it is December 27, 2008 Eli (Lee, NH) This system is clearly geared as an improvement over the speakers built into your television. The sound quality is pretty good, although there is no real way to adjust via an equalizer. I've been pleased with the quality from the upconverting DVD player, although I don't know if this is a big selling point now that blu-ray players have come down in price.
My biggest gripe is the fact that the amp is built into the sub and not the DVD player. That means that you are limited in where you can place the sub - you're basically stuck with putting it right next to your TV and not next to your couch or in a corner.
I have this system in a family room where running a full surround sound system really wasn't an option, so this has served us well. But now that I have a blu-ray player, I've found that it's really not expandable. With how I have to wire one player into another, it now only works with the blu-ray and not with the TV.
